SMS-Technologies (Short Message Service) – A service of short messages to exchange information through canals of mobile connection. For organization of SMS service a Short Message Service Centre (SMSC) is created, which implemented all the functions, connected with receiving, intermediate saving and controlling a delivery a message to a customer. In a structure of SMSC the typical components are usually marked:  a message’s server (dealed to work infrastructure, with processing of messages and control it’s delivery) and a locking device. The last provides the interaction with components of server with a network infrastructure, interface with a service of voice and electronic mail, for example SMS-centers of other mobile systems.  

SMS in GSM. Thought the support of SMS Technologies is provided in many standards of GSM and PCS-connection, this service become wide spread in GSM. GSM standard provides the possibility of realization of two kinds of SMS services – individual exchange of information and broadcasting. The regime of individual exchange of messages provides the transfer between mobile station of a subscriber and centre of processing of blocks messages.

SMS intended to mobile users can be received in SMSC from subscribers of this or other nets, by data link of different informational services, and also could be typed manually by operator of a centre, receiving calls by ordinary telephone line.

The sended SMS message together with a office information  (the recipient’s address and  time cue) pass from SMSC server on interface device, which requested a HLR database and identify the current location of a subscriber. Then a message in a type of signal pocket (MAP message) goes to an appropriate centre of network’s commutation. The last installs the connection with mobile station (if it wasn’t activated before by voice call) and passes the data, using a protocol of voice channel.

The receiving text is displayed on the screen, stored in ID module of cell phone (Subscriber Identity Module - SIM) or sended on another device, for example PC.

SMS messages from subscriber (typed using a phone’s keyboard, beforehead written in SIM module and passing with a computer, pass the same way to the opposite direction to SMSC server, which then sends a confirmation to a subscriber.

Inner format of SMS
A total size of message could reach 163 bites among them are:

1 bite of a headline, includes a type of message;
7 bite temporary mark of SMS centre, in format  YYMMDDHHMMSSZZ;
up to 12 bite – a source’s address of a message;
1 bite – identification of a protocol;
1 bite – a scheme of data’s encryption;
1 bite – a length of user’s data field;
up to 140 bite – a message itself
